Southampton 1-2 Manchester Utd Report
Southampton tried to repeat their famous 1976 win over United at Wembley when Richard Chaplow scored the opening goal. However, Michael Owen and Javier Hernandez gave United a dramatic comeback. Southampton did not have to face Wayne Rooney or Dimitar Berbatov. Instead, they faced rookie goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard, and a defence consisting of John O'Shea, Johnny Evans, Chris Smalling and Fabio Da Silva. Richard Chaplow scored the opening goal for Southampton before half-time when he got into United's penalty area and blasted the ball into the roof of the net. Alex Ferguson sent on Ryan Giggs and Nani after the first 13 minutes in the second half brought no equaliser.The second goal came with Gabriel Obertan made a fantastic cross which found Michael Owen, who headed home his first goal since September. In the final 18 minutes, Ryan Giggs found Javier Hernandez, who scored the game-winner after defender Jose Miguel da Rocha Fonte slipped.
